Opinions they say, are like noses, everybody has one. Nowadays, everybody has an opinion on every single issue be it gay marriage, feminism, beauty as a weapon, banning of okada, fuel subsidy probe, boko haram, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Buhari-Bakare, height, weight, manners, respect and even who should have been chosen as the best singer, rapper or dancer at a talent show.
Every single one of those people with opinions wants to be heard and you find that most of them decide to shout at the top of their lungs so they can be heard above all others. Can you picture this scenario? It may be ranting on twitter or putting up blog posts or writing articles (like I’m doing now… hehehehe) or standing on a soapbox with Ahuja-Ahuja shouting at pedestrians. Whatever it is, people have gone beyond just having opinions to expressing them most expressively! And if you dare stand against them or voice an opinion contrary to theirs, you are shouted down or insulted. It reminds me of Tomi Oladepo’s SPIRAL OF SILENCE & TWITTER. Like I told her, I didn’t even comment on that post because of the same reason she was talking about… 🙂
Why can’t we all get along?
What happens when someone’s opinion is actually wrong? When his/her view is truly warped? What should one do then? Stand by and watch the person live their life believing a lie? Not speak so that it wouldn’t look like one is ranting? Open the person’s brain and tighten loose knots? What?
Where did our value system go? Most people shy away because when they try to uphold a value system, they are labelled as judgemental. When people feel defensive, they tend to attack or fight back to protect themselves. Who decides what is right and what is wrong? Where are the dividing lines? Is it right because everyone is doing it? Are certain value systems wrong and are some others right?
What went wrong… where did it all go wrong?
May God help us all.
